About Us

First of all, who's "us"? It's just me. But "About Me" sounded a little desperate, and we're trying to maintain at least some level of professionalism here.

Well, as the name suggests, the point of this website is to make it possible for you to pay me a dollar.

That's it.

That's the entire business model.

You can call it radical capitalism. Or perhaps socialism, since the price is strictly controlled. Maybe it's something entirely new. A revolutionary economic system in which you have a dollar, I would like that dollar, and modern technology allows us to resolve this disagreement peacefully.

But who cares about labels?

Isn't it wonderful?

Isn't it absolutely magnificent that we live in an age where a complete stranger can transfer one American dollar to another complete stranger, anywhere in the world, simply by pressing a button?

Think about that for a moment.

Humanity spent thousands of years developing agriculture, metallurgy, mathematics, philosophy, electricity, telecommunications, and the internet.

We sent people to the Moon.

We split the atom.

We mapped the human genome.

And what did we do with all that knowledge?

We created a website where you can give me a dollar.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.

And the best part? You get to watch the total update live!

That's right. LIVE!

You press the button, you pay your dollar, and somewhere on this very page, a number goes up.

By one.

Not by two. Not by seventeen. By ONE.

It's mathematics happening right before your very eyes.

Now, you may be thinking, "Well, what exactly do I get in return?"

And THAT, my friend, is where things become truly extraordinary.

NOTHING.

Absolutely nothing.

No product. No service. No downloadable PDF. No inspirational e-book written by an AI pretending to be a retired Navy SEAL. No access to an exclusive community of people who also paid a dollar. No motivational podcast. No revolutionary cryptocurrency. No collectible monkey pictures.

NOTHING!

I KNOW, RIGHT?!

We've completely eliminated the single most annoying part of shopping: having to decide whether something is worth buying.

Because there's nothing to buy!

You don't have to compare prices.

You don't have to read reviews.

You don't have to watch an unboxing video narrated by a man who keeps saying "guys."

You don't have to wonder whether the product will live up to your expectations.

There is no product to disappoint you!

Think about the implications.

What if every business operated like this?

Imagine walking into a car dealership.

"Good afternoon, sir! Interested in buying a car?"

"No, thank you. I'd just like to give you some money."

"Excellent choice, sir. Would you like the extended warranty?"

"On what?"

"Precisely."

The automotive industry would collapse, of course, but that's hardly my problem.

Now, I can already hear the skeptics.

"Oh, so you're basically just begging for money on the internet."

EXCUSE ME?!

How dare you?

I am NOT some sort of modern beggar with a domain name and a PayPal link!

Well.

Technically.

I mean, if you strip away the branding, the technical infrastructure, the philosophical framework, and the considerable artistic vision involved in this project...

Actually, you know what?

Let's not strip those things away.

They're important.

Because, ladies and gentlemen, I consider myself an ARTIST.

And this website?

This is my masterpiece.

A groundbreaking work of interactive, participatory, postmodern financial performance art.

The relationship between the observer and the observed is completely transformed. The traditional boundaries between creator, consumer, and financial transaction dissolve into a single act of voluntary economic surrender.

You are not purchasing art.

You are becoming part of the art.

And by "becoming part of the art," I mean you're giving me a dollar.

Marcel Duchamp put a urinal in a museum and changed the history of art forever.

I put a PayPal button on a website.

Who's to say which contribution is more important?

Art historians, probably.

But art historians have been wrong before.

Besides, have you seen how much modern art sells for these days?

Millions!

MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!

For a canvas with three lines on it!

And you're standing here, questioning my ONE DOLLAR?

My friend, I am practically giving this experience away.

Except, obviously, I'm not giving anything away.

That's the whole point.

Keep up.

Now, let's discuss YOU.

Yes, you.

The person reading this.

You magnificent, financially independent, suspiciously hesitant individual.

Have you paid your dollar yet?

No?

WHY THE HELL NOT?!

What are you waiting for?

A discount?

It's ONE DOLLAR!

What would a discount even look like?

Ninety-nine cents?

Do you really want to humiliate both of us over a penny?

I have standards.

Admittedly, they're extremely low standards, but they're standards nonetheless.

Perhaps you're waiting for Black Friday.

Well, I have some excellent news.

On Black Friday, the price will be one dollar.

On Cyber Monday?

One dollar.

Christmas?

One dollar.

Your birthday?

ONE. DOLLAR.

Our pricing strategy is so stable it should be studied by central banks.

While other businesses are experimenting with dynamic pricing, artificial intelligence, personalized discounts, and complicated subscription tiers, we have achieved something truly remarkable:

We have absolutely no pricing strategy whatsoever.

A dollar is a dollar.

Unless inflation gets completely out of control, in which case a dollar will still be a dollar, just a considerably less impressive one.

But that's between you and the Federal Reserve.

Don't drag me into it.

You might ask, "Why not charge two dollars?"

An excellent question.

Because then the website would have to be called Pay Me Two Dollars.

Do you have any idea how much work that would be?

We'd have to change the title.

The button.

Possibly the domain.

It's a logistical nightmare.

No, thank you.

We have found our price point, and we are sticking to it with the determination of a Swiss watchmaker and the business sophistication of a raccoon that has discovered an unattended wallet.

Now, I'm sure some of you are wondering about our mission.

Every respectable company has a mission statement.

Google wants to organize the world's information.

SpaceX wants to make humanity multiplanetary.

Various pharmaceutical companies want to improve human health.

And we?

We want your dollar.

Simple.

Elegant.

Achievable.

No corporate jargon. No complicated five-year strategic roadmaps. No annual shareholder letters filled with phrases like "unlocking synergies" and "leveraging transformative ecosystems."

We have no ecosystems to leverage.

We barely have an ecosystem at all.

What we have is a button.

And a dream.

Actually, scratch the dream.

The button is sufficient.

And unlike most startups, we don't need to convince investors that we'll eventually become profitable.

Our unit economics are astonishingly simple.

You give me a dollar.

I receive a dollar, subject to payment-processing fees and the usual unpleasant realities of financial infrastructure.

And that's it.

No warehouses.

No shipping delays.

No customer support representatives telling you that your call is very important to them.

No supply chain disruptions because a cargo ship got stuck sideways in a canal.

You know what our inventory looks like?

NOTHING.

And we're NEVER running out!

That's right!

UNLIMITED SUPPLY OF ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Try doing that, Amazon.

But perhaps you're a sophisticated investor.

Perhaps you're looking at this website and asking yourself about the return on investment.

Well, let's examine that.

You invest one dollar.

What do you receive?

Nothing.

What's your expected financial return?

Zero.

What's your investment horizon?

Irrelevant.

What's your exit strategy?

You close the browser tab.

I don't want to sound arrogant, but I believe we've just created the most transparent investment opportunity in human history.

There's no fine print hiding the risks.

There's no charismatic founder promising that his revolutionary AI-powered blockchain platform will disrupt the global turnip industry.

There's just me.

Standing here.

Figuratively.

Asking for a dollar.

Actually, I'm not even standing here.

I could be asleep right now.

That's the beauty of automation.

I CAN RECEIVE MONEY WHILE I'M SLEEPING.

Financial gurus have been selling courses about passive income for decades, and I've finally cracked the code.

The secret?

Build a website.

Ask for a dollar.

Go to bed.

Of course, the system does have one significant vulnerability.

People have to actually pay the dollar.

Which brings us back to you.

Still reading.

Still thinking.

Still in possession of that dollar.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Let's talk about trust.

Trust is the foundation of every successful business relationship.

You need to know that the person you're dealing with is honest, reliable, and capable of delivering on their promises.

And I can proudly tell you that my promise is very simple:

You will get nothing.

I stand behind that promise one hundred percent.

Not ninety-nine percent.

Not ninety-nine point nine percent.

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.

If you pay your dollar and receive nothing, we have successfully fulfilled our obligations.

Congratulations!

Another satisfied customer.

Or donor.

Or patron.

Or participant in a deeply questionable socioeconomic experiment.

Frankly, our legal department hasn't settled on the terminology.

We don't actually have a legal department.

It's just me occasionally looking concerned while reading things on the internet.

But that's not important.

What matters is transparency.

And I ask you: has any company ever been MORE transparent about what you're getting?

You could buy a vacuum cleaner and discover that it doesn't clean particularly well.

You could buy a luxury watch and discover that your phone already tells you the time.

You could buy a gym membership and discover that you don't actually enjoy going to the gym.

But you cannot possibly buy nothing and then complain that it wasn't what you expected.

That would be ridiculous.

"I demand to speak to the manager!"

"What's the problem, sir?"

"I paid a dollar and received absolutely nothing!"

"Wonderful! Everything seems to be working correctly."

I suppose we should discuss our environmental impact.

Because sustainability is important.

And I'm pleased to announce that our product requires no packaging, no transportation, no manufacturing facilities, no raw materials, and no physical storage.

That's because, and I cannot emphasize this enough, THERE IS NO PRODUCT.

Our digital operations still have an environmental footprint, obviously, but when it comes to the environmental impact of manufacturing our merchandise, we're doing spectacularly well.

We manufacture zero units.

Every single day.

Twenty-four hours a day.

Seven days a week.

Our production efficiency is so extraordinary that we can produce absolutely nothing without lifting a finger.

And we've been doing it consistently since the company was founded.

Some businesses talk about achieving net-zero emissions.

We've achieved net-zero products.

A remarkable accomplishment.

I expect an award.

Possibly a Nobel Prize.

I'm not entirely sure which category.

Economics?

Peace?

Literature?

Perhaps all three.

The Nobel Committee is welcome to contact me.

Although if they want me to accept the award, I should warn them in advance that there will be a one-dollar processing fee.

Now, I know what you're thinking.

"Surely this can't go on forever."

Oh, my sweet summer child.

You underestimate me.

I could talk about this website for HOURS.

I could give presentations.

I could write a book.

A book about a website that exists exclusively to collect one-dollar payments.

Chapter One: The Dollar.

Chapter Two: The Button.

Chapter Three: The Transaction.

Chapter Four: Why Haven't You Paid Yet?

Chapter Five: An Open Letter to the People Who Read Chapter Four and Still Haven't Paid.

Chapter Six: The Emotional Consequences of Your Refusal.

Chapter Seven: Acceptance.

Chapter Eight: Another Dollar.

It would be a bestseller.

Probably.

And I'd charge nineteen ninety-nine for it.

Which would make absolutely no sense, considering the website itself only asks for one dollar.

But publishing is a complicated industry.

Actually, this gives me an idea.

What if we make a movie?

A major Hollywood production.

An epic three-hour drama about a visionary entrepreneur who creates a website where people can pay him one dollar.

We open with a dramatic shot of a laptop.

Rain is falling.

Thunder rumbles in the distance.

A man sits alone in a dark room.

He whispers:

"What if..."

The camera slowly moves closer.

"...people..."

The music begins to swell.

"...could just..."

An orchestra explodes.

"...give me a dollar?"

CUT TO BLACK.

PAY ME A DOLLAR

Based on an unnecessarily true story.

Coming soon to theaters everywhere.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the Dollar.

Morgan Freeman as the Narrator.

And Nicolas Cage as the Website.

I haven't contacted any of these people.

But I think Nicolas would understand the artistic vision.

He seems like a man who appreciates the occasional unusual financial decision.

Speaking of financial decisions, have you ever considered what your dollar could be doing right now?

It could be sitting in a bank account.

Boring.

It could be invested in an index fund.

Responsible, but boring.

It could be spent on a cheap snack.

Delicious, perhaps, but temporary.

Or...

And hear me out here...

It could be transferred to a complete stranger who has written several thousand words attempting to persuade you to do precisely that.

Now THAT is a story.

Imagine telling your grandchildren.

"Grandpa, what did you do during the great technological revolution of the twenty-first century?"

"Well, children, I participated in an extraordinary digital experiment."

"Were you a scientist?"

"No."

"An astronaut?"

"No."

"Did you help invent artificial intelligence?"

"Not exactly."

"Then what did you do?"

"I gave a man on the internet one dollar."

Silence.

The children exchange confused glances.

A single tear rolls down your cheek.

"And I'd do it again."

Beautiful.

I'm getting emotional just thinking about it.

And let's not forget the COMMUNITY.

Oh yes.

The global community of people who have paid me a dollar.

A unique group of individuals connected by a shared experience.

An international brotherhood.

A fellowship of generosity, curiosity, and questionable judgment.

People from different countries, different cultures, different backgrounds.

United by one simple act.

Giving me money.

Do these people know each other?

No.

Do they communicate?

No.

Do they have meetings?

Absolutely not.

Is there a membership card?

Of course not.

But spiritually?

Spiritually, they're practically a family.

A family where nobody talks to anybody and one guy keeps all the money.

Come to think of it, that's not entirely unlike some actual families.

But I digress.

Imagine a world where one million people each paid me a dollar.

A MILLION DOLLARS!

Think of the possibilities.

I could buy a nice house.

A small yacht, perhaps.

A very large collection of ceramic frogs.

I don't know why I said ceramic frogs.

I've never collected ceramic frogs.

But with a million dollars, I could become the sort of eccentric wealthy individual who collects ceramic frogs.

And isn't that what the internet is all about?

Helping complete strangers fulfill dreams they didn't even know they had?

Somebody has to keep the ceramic frog industry alive.

It might as well be me.

You know, sometimes I wonder what future historians will say about this website.

Centuries from now, when archaeologists are excavating the digital remains of our civilization, they'll discover the great monuments of our era.

The vast libraries of human knowledge.

The masterpieces of digital art.

The extraordinary technological achievements that transformed society.

And then they'll find this.

A website.

With a button.

Asking for a dollar.

They'll study it carefully.

They'll assemble teams of experts.

They'll write academic papers.

"What was its purpose?"

"Was it a religious ritual?"

"An ancient form of taxation?"

"Perhaps a symbolic act of wealth redistribution?"

After decades of research, one brave scholar will finally stand before the International Congress of Digital Archaeology and announce:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I believe I have solved the mystery."

The room falls silent.

"The creator..."

A long pause.

"...wanted a dollar."

The audience gasps.

A woman faints.

Three professors resign.

Civilization is forever changed.

Anyway.

Where were we?

Ah, yes.

YOUR DOLLAR.

I feel we've developed quite a relationship at this point.

We've explored economics together.

We've discussed philosophy.

We've challenged conventional definitions of art.

We've confronted the environmental implications of producing absolutely nothing.

We've envisioned an Oscar-winning motion picture starring Nicolas Cage as a website.

And yet...

I can't help but notice something.

A certain distance between us.

An unresolved tension.

A tiny financial elephant in the room.

YOU STILL HAVEN'T PAID THE DOLLAR, HAVE YOU?

Unbelievable.

I've opened my heart to you.

I've shared my dreams.

I've explained my revolutionary business model in more detail than most publicly traded corporations explain their quarterly earnings.

What more do you want from me?

A PowerPoint presentation?

Fine.

Slide One: You Have a Dollar.

Slide Two: I Want the Dollar.

Slide Three: You Give Me the Dollar.

Slide Four: Thank You.

Slide Five: Questions?

There.

Are we satisfied?

No?

Perhaps you need to consult your financial advisor.

"Hello, I'd like your professional opinion on a potential one-dollar transaction."

"Certainly. What are you buying?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Absolutely nothing."

"Is it a charitable donation?"

"No."

"Is the recipient a family member?"

"No."

"Do you know this person?"

"Not at all."

"Then why are you considering this?"

"Because he wrote a very long and increasingly unstable About Us page."

Your financial advisor will probably tell you not to do it.

That's understandable.

They're trained to think inside the box.

And this?

This is so far outside the box that the box has filed a missing-person report.

But perhaps I've been approaching this the wrong way.

Perhaps I've been too aggressive.

Too enthusiastic.

Too emotionally invested in a transaction involving a sum of money that can barely purchase a decent cup of coffee.

Perhaps you simply need time.

Time to reflect.

Time to evaluate.

Time to sit quietly by a window and contemplate the fragile beauty of human existence.

Who are we?

Why are we here?

What is the meaning of life?

And, most importantly...

WHY DOES THIS MAN WANT MY DOLLAR SO BADLY?

A fair question.

A profound question.

One that deserves a thoughtful and carefully considered answer.

So here it is.

Because...

And I need you to pay very close attention...

I WOULD RATHER HAVE YOUR DOLLAR THAN NOT HAVE YOUR DOLLAR.

There.

I've said it.

The truth.

Raw. Unfiltered. Vulnerable.

It wasn't easy.

But I believe honesty is the foundation of every meaningful human connection.

And now that we've established that connection, I believe there's only one logical thing left to do.

You know what it is.

I know what it is.

Even Nicolas Cage knows what it is.

So go ahead.

Press the button.

Pay the dollar.

Watch the number go up.

Feel that brief, inexplicable sensation of having participated in something simultaneously meaningless and strangely satisfying.

And then continue with your day.

Your life will remain fundamentally unchanged.

The universe will keep expanding.

The planets will continue orbiting the Sun.

The global economy will remain a confusing and occasionally terrifying collection of spreadsheets.

And somewhere, in some corner of the world, one man will be very slightly wealthier.

That man is me.

And I think that's beautiful.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your attention.

Thank you for your willingness to read an absolutely unreasonable amount of text about a website that does essentially nothing.

And most importantly...

Thank you for your dollar.

Wait.

What?

You haven't paid?

OH, FOR FUCK'S SAKE.
